ISLAND :: Review & Giveaway

ISLAND Cover

I have the opportunity to share with you Jane Richmond’s newest collection of patterns in an ebook (or book!) called ISLAND. I have to say that the ebook is really well put together & the patterns are just stunning.

Arbutus

My favourite pattern in this book is the Arbutus Cowl. It’s very cute (my style!) and even the yarn/color is just stunning/a great choice. (I ♥ madelinetosh tosh dk!)

ISLAND Grace Collage ISLAND Rathtrevor CollageISLAND Renfrew ISLAND Strathcona Collage

There are 4 other patterns in the book as well, Strathcona (bottom right), Renfrew (bottom left), Rathtrevor (top right), Grace (top left). The patterns are just amazing, and look at the photography of them… they are gorgeous. The photographer happens to be Jane’s own brother, Nicholas Kupiak.

The book layout is very well though out and put together.  I caught on that the book had one sweater pattern, with 4 accessories to go with it – not sure if this was intentional or not? There’s a pair of fingerless mitts, a hat, a scarf and that fave cowl of mine. How genius! And the stunning photos taken on Vancouver Island, are breathtaking… I can’t express how much I mean this. The entire ebook shows that a lot of work was put into it.

I’ve always been a fan of Jane’s work. While I actually own several of her patterns, I haven’t yet knit any of them… I know, I know… But so many that I do want to make of hers. Jane’s designs come out so fast, that I don’t have enough time to knit them fast enough. (Especially since the current sweater I’m working on, has been in progress since last June, sigh). I’m off to go figure out which of Jane’s patterns I will start next. It will be my next project. (If my husband doesn’t notice that I’ve been neglecting his 2nd Sock…owed from Xmas 2009… oops, shhh!)

If you want to get your hands on a copy of ISLAND, you can get print copies through Amazon.ca, Amazon.com or at your local yarn shop. You can pick-up a copy of the ebook on Ravelry here.

Would you like a chance to WIN your own copy of the ebook? Jane has generously given me a ebook to give away to one of my lucky readers!

  9. This pattern book rocks! :) I would like to say that I would start with the Grace cardigan in creamy-white Rowan 4-ply wool from my stash, but it would be more realistic to start with a pair of the Rathtrevor handwarmers since I already have three other cardigans in my queue! I LOVE cardigans.

  11. I've wanted to knit the cowl for quite a while in some merino/camel DK that I have. And, saw a pair of the mitts up close and in person and need those, as well (same yarn).

so many lovely patterns, and :( so little time to knit them all... but,if I could, the cowl would become my cold weather stand by.

  20. I'd definitely knit the Grace cardigan! I might use Malabrigo Sock, Wollmeise Twin or Pure, Cascade Heritage as it's easily available, or maybe some locally hand-dyed yarn :)

My Ravelry nick is Vilhelmine, in case I win :)

    in some plucky knitter yarn!

  22. I seriously love all the patterns! I think the cowl is my favourite, but I'm not sure I have yarn for it in my stash right now... So it would be a good opportunity to try madelinetosh! I agree with you, the colour is gorgeous!

  30. I'm jenboh on ravelry. I really love all the patterns so much, but with summer coming I think that Strathcona in cotton or linen would be perfect!

  31. I'm HeatherDB on Ravelry and am actually co-hosting the Grace KAL for the upcoming Mad May event in the Madelinetosh Lovers group. I've got tosh Pashmina already on order and can't wait to get started. It seems like the perfect spring/summer cardi.

  32. Grace is simply perfect! Quince & co finch would be my yarn choice.

  34. I love the cardigan!! Although I'm just learning how to knit that cardigan is right up my alley. My user name on ravelry is rmancuso but, you know where to find me :)

  35. I love the mitts and the scarf. I don't know what I would use - I'd have to scour the stash, but I'd go with a semi-solid for sure!

  36. I think my first post was nixed.

I love the mitts and the scarfy. I would knit it out of a semi-solid yarn, but I'm not sure which one yet.

  37. Pretty! I love the patterns!

I'd do the Arbutus cowl in dk or worsted, in semisolid or even more variegated yarns. I have a merino silk DK in my stash that would be perfect for it.

The renfrew hat, I'd do in either sport, dk, or worsted, most likely semisolid. I have the perfect pairing in my stash - madelinetosh dk, colorway "midnight in manhattan."

The strathcona is also lovely. I'd do that in fingering to sport. Those single skeins that never became socks would be perfect as this, but I could also use some tosh pashmina that I have in, or even some tilli thomas silk that has been sitting in my stash.

(and in case I win -- mintmocha on ravelry) :)

  40. I love them all. I'd knit Renfrew in Madelinetosh Vintage.

Glad to see another giveaway for Island; didn't think there would be anymore.

I'd like to knit the Strathcona. It's not something I'd normally wear- not my style- yet theres' something very modern and very 80's about the design. I'd probably use a Malabrigo yarn- a bruised purple color or blue like the Caribbean waters.

  46. I love the arbutus cowl. I knit the honey comb cowl this winter in my fav yarn, Madelinetosh and would knit this cowl in the same yarn, probably in the seaway, or white wash. Thanks Rav ID- Cynjackson

  47. I would love to win ISLAND, all the designs are beautiful and I would knit up Arbutus first in Madeleine Tosh, for sure...followed by Strathcona in Quince & co. Thank you for the great give away. Cheers

  52. I love Island and I want to knit all the patterns! :) but I'd start with Rathtrevor in madelinetosh tosh dk (I haven't chosen a colour yet...). I never used that yarn and I'd really like to try it because it looks amazing!
