Vivacious KIDS :: Review & Giveaway!

Vivacious

I got the opportunity to review Vivacious KIDS, an eBook with 7 kids patterns in it for children aged 2 & 10 designed by both Ella Austin & Rachel Coopey. The patterns are all shown in Fibrespates Vivacious DK an 4 ply yarns. (Unfortunately I do not own any Fibrespates yarn). The eBook features 2 hats, 2 sweaters (one cardigan & one pullover), a pair of socks, a jumper and a pair of mittens).

fyberspates_day2_541.CR2 hat

Right away I was drawn to the Swashbuckle hoody pattern. I also really like the Jack-be-nimble hat as it uses sock yarn, and boy do I have plenty of that in my stash. With 3 young boys who are growing fast, I’m always on the look-out for nice knitting patterns for them. All these patterns would look great using handdyed yarn. They look like classic designs, and I definitely like ageless pieces. Some styles are great for hand-me-downs, especially when you have 3 children of the same sex. What I like is that any of these patterns (except the little dress of course), could be knit for a boy or girl. This is a well rounded book with lots of extra information, such as help with sizing guidance, gauge, techniques and very useful links to tutorials online. I always love great pictures in pattern books, and the photography by Jesse Wild is wonderful.

Jeni at Fyberspates has kindly given me the opportunity to host a giveaway of this eBook.  I am offering one of my lucky readers the chance to win and in order to do so, I am asking you to leave a comment on this post and let me know which one is your favourite pattern from this collection. Let me know which one and why! You can view all the patterns here. Also, please either leave your Ravelry ID or your email address if you are not on Ravelry so that the eBook can be sent to you. I'll pick the winner Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 at 10pm (EST).

If you cannot wait to see if you’ve won and must purchase this awesome eBook now, you can purchase Vivacious Kids on Ravelry using an exclusive discount code I have to offer you. Use the code: KnitPurlMama to receive 25% off the book or any of the single patterns from now until Sunday, August 9th, 2015. If you do win the collection and you did buy the collection, Fyberspates will reimburse you.

Do let me know if you knit any of these lovely patterns, I’d love to see how they turn out!

Note: I was gifted a copy of Viviacious Kids Pattern Book to review however all opinions in this review are my own.

ISLAND :: Review & Giveaway

ISLAND Cover

I have the opportunity to share with you Jane Richmond’s newest collection of patterns in an ebook (or book!) called ISLAND. I have to say that the ebook is really well put together & the patterns are just stunning.

Arbutus

My favourite pattern in this book is the Arbutus Cowl. It’s very cute (my style!) and even the yarn/color is just stunning/a great choice. (I ♥ madelinetosh tosh dk!)

ISLAND Grace Collage ISLAND Rathtrevor CollageISLAND Renfrew ISLAND Strathcona Collage

There are 4 other patterns in the book as well, Strathcona (bottom right), Renfrew (bottom left), Rathtrevor (top right), Grace (top left). The patterns are just amazing, and look at the photography of them… they are gorgeous. The photographer happens to be Jane’s own brother, Nicholas Kupiak.

The book layout is very well though out and put together.  I caught on that the book had one sweater pattern, with 4 accessories to go with it – not sure if this was intentional or not? There’s a pair of fingerless mitts, a hat, a scarf and that fave cowl of mine. How genius! And the stunning photos taken on Vancouver Island, are breathtaking… I can’t express how much I mean this. The entire ebook shows that a lot of work was put into it.

I’ve always been a fan of Jane’s work. While I actually own several of her patterns, I haven’t yet knit any of them… I know, I know… But so many that I do want to make of hers. Jane’s designs come out so fast, that I don’t have enough time to knit them fast enough. (Especially since the current sweater I’m working on, has been in progress since last June, sigh). I’m off to go figure out which of Jane’s patterns I will start next. It will be my next project. (If my husband doesn’t notice that I’ve been neglecting his 2nd Sock…owed from Xmas 2009… oops, shhh!)

If you want to get your hands on a copy of ISLAND, you can get print copies through Amazon.ca, Amazon.com or at your local yarn shop. You can pick-up a copy of the ebook on Ravelry here.

Would you like a chance to WIN your own copy of the ebook? Jane has generously given me a ebook to give away to one of my lucky readers!

Review & Giveaway #3

stasia2

Today I want to show you Shannon Cook’s brand new pattern, the Stasia Cowl.

stasia3

It’s an absolutely unique cowl with a great design. It’s knit up using a Worsted Weight yarn, and I have some leftover Dream in Color Classy in my stash that this cowl would look fabulous in. I definitely plan to knit up one of these as well, but only after I finish some stuff on needles and getting on those teacher Christmas gifts that I need to get cracking on. (I promised myself that starting November, I’d dedicate the month to the teachers gifts, for as long as I need to, to get them done – more about that in another blog post though).

stasia

Shannon (isn’t she gorgeous in the above photo, I absolutely lover her blue eyes!) has generously offered to give one my readers a copy of her new pattern (released only yesterday!) Be sure to enter to win! Here’s how:

1 – Leave a comment on this blog and let me know what yarn you think you’d knit this up in(with an email address if it’s not attached to your profile)

Review & Giveaway #2

coverpage

This new 92 page ebook, Ghosts: historiographies, cultural manifestations, and the knits they’ve inspired is by Teresa Gregorio (aka CanaryKnits). This eBook collection includes 11 patterns as well as researched information about “ghosts” throughout the ages. Teresa is selling this timely (for Halloween!) ebook for $18 Canadian (but one of you can win a copy, so keep reading!) or pick which pattern you want to knit for approximately $5.50 – 6.50 Canadian. I’ve never been really into ghosts or gothic things, but I’ve found myself intrigued by this collection and the information Teresa has put in it. The patterns in the ebook are all inspired by the tales included.

lovethis

By far, my fave pattern in this collection is Progression. I like that it’s done in a worsted weight and might just be the next shawl I cast on for.

hat

Calavera Catrina, was another pattern that caught my eye, I love the design on it.

utukku

Utukku, is very cute, and I love the ribbon use on it. Very unique & different.

You can check the whole collection out on Ravelry or visit the CanaryKnits website.

Teresa has generously offered up a digital copy of her book to of my lucky readers, via Ravelry (or via email if you’re not on Ravelry, and if you are a knitter and not on Ravelry, what are you waiting for?) a copy of "Ghosts"! All you have to do is:

1 – Leave a comment on this post letting me know which of Teresa’s 11 ghostly patterns you’d like to knit.
2 – Like Knit & Purl Mama on Facebook and leave an additional comment back here on this post.

Review & Giveaway #1

I meant to post this yesterday, but I wasn’t feeling well at all, so I ended up taking a nap last night instead once the kids were in bed. So without further delay, here’s today’s giveaway/review:

gasoi

I’ve been a fan of Jennifer Gasoi since seeing her perform live at a local venue back in 2009 with Sean & Mackenzie (Quentin wasn’t a twinkle in our eye yet). She was performing songs from her first album, Songs for You (iTunes Link, Amazon Canada link, Amazon USA link). Gasoi is a jazz trained musician (I love Jazz) and is Canadian (born in Vancouver) and currently residing in Montreal. I’m hoping to go see her perform at the beginning of December if the time works out.

JenniferGasoi_ThrowAPenny_FaceArt

She has now released her 2nd album, called Throw a Penny in the Wishing Well, (iTunes link, Amazon link, Chapters Link, Amazon USA link) which was released just this month. I received a copy of Throw a Penny in the Wishing Well to review & another copy for one of my lucky readers to win. Since receiving the CD, I’ve been listening to the album non-stop, even when the kids are not around. Her music is fun & lively and extremely cheerful. I love it. If you would like to win a copy of Jennifer’s latest CD, you can do so by following these steps:

1 – Leave a comment on this blog (with an email address if it’s not attached to your profile)
2 – Like Jennifer’s Facebook Page and come back & leave me a comment to tell me you have done so.
3 – Blog about the contest, Tweet about the contest, and come back and give me the link to your blog post/tweet.
4 – Come LIKE my Facebook page for an extra entry and then come back and let me know you're a new fan.
5 – Come join my Facebook Group for an extra entry and once I've approved your request, it will count as another entry.

I will keep this contest open until Halloween, at midnight, EST. I will draw a winner for the CD on November 1st, 2012 and announce it on my blog. GOOD LUCK!

Totally Desperate Mom

TDMhold

I just finished reading Wendy Hagen's Totally Desperate Mom. I read it in one sitting, on the car ride home from a wedding we went to last weekend in Ontario.  There were numerous times in the book that I found myself laughing out loud and my husband giving me strange looks. Just to give you a taste of the funnies, these were my fave parts:

"When Elijah was three he asked me some well-thought-out questions.
"Mommy, are there any letters called poo?"
"No, Elijah."
"Not any?"
"No, Elijah. You know all the letters in the alphabet and there is no poo. Why would there be poo in the alphabet?" And then it hit me - because there is pee in the alphabet! How could I be so potty-talk unaware?

Another part that made me laugh out loud and spit out the diet pepsi I was drinking was:

"I used to teach a body sculpting class at a gym at 6:30 A.M. One morning before class I used a cotton ball to clean my face with an astringent. (This was before I had children and actually had time to clean my face and use products). This cleaning felt particularly tingly. That's when I realized I was using nail polish remover. Oops. That's also when I realized I needed to find a different time slot to teach."

As a mother of 3 kids, like Hagen, I found myself relating a lot to this book. There were some parts that I couldn't relate, but that was more on the religious side, however, it was still interesting, even though I couldn't relate. Hagan also has a section of the book dedicated to taking care of the home, and has a great time budget chart for chores, which I actually want to start implementing in my house, as I need to come up with a better (and more efficient way) to do chores.

I absolutely recommend this book, it's a quick read & totally funny. Hagen's blog is quite refreshing as well. I love her weekly Stylin' Saturdays and her Hollywood Days posts (she was a childhood actress on The New Lassie show, also guest staring on 2 of my fave childhood shows,  Growing Pains & The Wonder Years! Her blog is definitely one you should add to your blog roll.

For one of my readers, Wendy Hagen has sent me an autographed copy of her book. All you have to do is leave (one per person please) a comment on this blog post. You have until the end of the night, Tuesday, September 18th to enter the contest and on the 19th of September I will randomly choose a winner to mail the book to! Open to Canadian and USA residents. If you don't win, but want to purchase a copy of this book for yourself and for gifts for other mommy friends, the book is for sale here. You can read Chapter 1 as a preview here. (You can also get it on Amazon here, or for kindle here).

Colours to Go

rolls

Colours To Go owner Susannah Findlay and I bonded over the fact that we were both reading the same book (I'm still reading it... as I got distracted from it). I asked her if I could review one of her products, and that an upcoming trip with the kids was a perfect time to do so, and not only am I reviewing this product, Susannah has donated not one, but TWO colouring wallets (with gel pens) for me to giveaway to 2 lucky readers!

crayonsinroll

These crayon (or gel pen) colouring wallets are very well made, and are in super bold colors.

rollopenrolls2

They fit nicely into your purse, diaper bag, or into a kid's backpack. This product is fantastic and a great thing to bring along to keep kids entertained. They are super handy and I was glad to test out this product. They also make a great gift.

atairport mackatairport coloringwhilewaitcoloring2 planetimecolor onplane

My boys absolutely loved it, and kept going to the pad in the wallet to color on, instead of the colouring book that was in their carry on bag. It was a great hit! If you'd like to win one for your child, or if you don't have a kid, to give away as a gift to a kid you love, here are some ways to win:

- Leave a comment on this post only, after subscribing to my blog & let me know you are now a subscriber!
- Leave a comment on this post only, after following Colours To Go on Facebook & let me know you are now a follower.
- Leave a comment on this post only, after following Colours To Go on Twitter & let me know you are now a follower.
- Leave a comment on this post only, after following Me on Twitter & let me know you are now a follower.
- If you are not on facebook or twitter, please go to Colours To Go's website, and let me know which of her products besides the colouring wallet (which I am giving away) you just love!

You can leave ONE comment for EACH thing you do. If you do all of them, that's 5 ENTRIES! You have until February 29th (a leap year this year!) to enter this comment, at midnight EST. I will announce the winner shortly after that time.

Blog Party

knitatparkMay2011

I've been getting some knitting done, whenever I can sneak in a row.
The best time during the day is at the park while the boys play in the sandbox.

progressSwyatt

I've made a huge progress on Sean's Wyatt. It's not 50% done.
About to work on the flip side.

Well, it's now June. June marks my birthday month. In honor of my "big" birthday this year, (I'm turning the big 3-0!), I thought I'd throw a huge blog party and give away prizes. How do you like them apples!?

What's up for grabs?

We've got...

- 3 copies of my very own Sock Collection.
- 3 RAKJpatterns crochet patterns by designer Kristi Simpson (winner's choice!) (Facebook link)
- 1 pattern by Jennifer Lori - winner's choice.
- 1 copy of Boheme Mama by Allegra Wermuth.
- 1 copy of I Heart Aran by Tanis Lavallée.
- 1 copy of a SpillyJane pattern, winner's choice.
- 1 copy of a Jane Richmond pattern, winner's choice.
- 1 copy of Gowanus by Alexis Winslow.
- 1 copy of a Ysolda Teague pattern, winner's choice.
- 1 copy of a Fuzzy Mitten pattern, by designer Barbara Prime.
- 1 copy of Vanadium, 1 copy of Exposed & 1 copy of Askew by Lisa Mutch.
- 1 copy of a pattern from Maybe Matilda's etsy shop.
- 1 Subscription to KnitCircus (4 issues) + 2 copies of the current issue out.
- 1 copy of Catherine McKenzie's book Spin.
- 1 copy of Catherine McKenzie's book Arranged.
- 1 copy of Shawn Klomparens' book Two Years No Rain.
- 1 copy of Shawn Klomparens' book Jessica Z.

What do you have to do to win? For the patterns, simply leave comments (on any post) between now & June 15th, 2011 11:59 pm EST, and on my actual birthday, June 16th, I will announce the winners. For the books, you need to go & join this Facebook group: I bet we can make these books best sellers (if you are a Facebook user) but if not, don't sweat it, just simply leave a comment on this post giving me a book recommendation and why you loved that book & why I would like it. If you're on Facebook and have joined the group, please come back to this post and tell me you have done so. If you have done so, and still want to leave me a book title recommendation - please feel free to as well.

So there you have it! The goodies up for grabs to celebrate my 30th birthday. I can't believe my birthday is in 16 days. The past year has flown by super quick. I am still slowly freaking out over the fact that I will be 30. I like the fact that I'll be in my 30's though. 30 sounds so sophisticated. It's all grown up. It's a new decade. My dream was to have 3 kids by 30, and I've successfully achieved that. I will have to set up some new goals, to accomplish before 40. I bet you anything, the next 10 years will fly by just like the last 10 years have. I pretty much remember my 20th birthday like it was yesterday. I thought 20 was so old, compared to my teenage years. I can tell you that I think I look good for 30. I have a great complexion (when not pregnant/hormonal - which is now over thankfully!), I am shedding the baby weight (have lost over 30 lbs since the beginning of the year) and I don't have any grey hairs yet (though, I totally thought I would). I feel great! Here's to turning 30!

Oh... and before I forget, the winner to last week's contest, of a copy of The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer is Mitali Ruths! Congrats! Please email me so I can coordinate with the author of the book to get you the download code for her ebook! Thanks everyone for participating in the contest.

The Key to Taking Pictures {Contest!}

I know that so many of you are interested in learning how to use their cameras to take better pictures. Cameras are not just for professional photographers anymore, but finding a good easy to read guide is sometimes hard to come by. So what do you do? Who do you turn to? Lucky for us some of the pros have started to share their knowledge through e-books (a new fave tool of mine!) and Katie Evans wrote one I love so much I had to share it with you. She wrote, The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer.

Not only is Katie's book filled with beautiful images, it's easy to read for those of you whom are visual learners. I've always been a visual learner, and to be able to put image examples with the text is a good thing. When it's all text and no imagery, sometimes it's hard to follow. Katie's book is very well done & laid out.
This e-book is 73 pages long. It seems like a lot, but it's actually quite easy to get through. It's a great guide to get DSLR users using the functions on their camera past the automatic feature and increase their knowledge of their camera. This will help you improve the photos you take with it. You will learn everything from ISO, Aperture, F-stop and Shutter speed and as well how to use them. You will learn also how to choose the right camera and accessories for your needs, and how to find the right lighting source (be it indoors/outdoors, natural light/flash this is the perfect book to learn from.

Look at these stunning photos! This entire book is inspiring. For the next 2 weeks (starting today) you can purchase the book for $14.95 instead of the original price of $16.95. You can use the discount code KNIT (Which is not case sensitive). The discount will be available for 2 weeks as of now (until Sunday, June 5th, 2011).

I do have the opportunity for one of my lucky readers to win a copy of the ebook. You will have to click over to Katie's Facebook Page and become a follower. You can also follow her blog in your Google Reader (or however you follow blogs). Once you've done so, please come back here (on this post only) & let me know that you're following her. If you follow both on Facebook & her blog in your feed reader, you will get 2 chances to win her book. (Leave separate entries for following her blog and FB fan page please so it counts twice).

You will have until Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 to enter the contest & follow Katie Evans. I will pick a winner on Wednesday, June 1st, 2011. Good luck!

3.17.11 :: 143 weeks old/ 33 months old

143wksM

Mack is 143 weeks old today and also 33 months old.
Getting him to sit still is becoming quite challenging.

Sean's sick today again (runny nose + a cough), and yesterday, while I was in the middle of feeding Quentin, and Mack needed to get dressed to go to daycare. I'm arguing with Mack to start getting ready and Sean turns to me and says "It's hard having three boys, eh mommy?" The stuff that comes out of this kid’s mouth kills me in laughter. Then tonight, we're at the dinner table (I was solo parenting tonight) and Mack turns to me and says "You're going to try to get me to eat this, right?" I swear, I almost chocked on my food it was priceless. I had made a pot roast in the slow cooker. Turns out, Mack convinced me to make him Kraft Dinner, Sean convinced me to make him Chef Boyardee (yep, the crap my kids actually like, right?) and I had pot roast. It was absolutely delicious (pot roast, not the other crap).

IrishBoys

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
(Mack wore a few different shades of green to daycare, I had a green shirt (I don't own green pants, which is fine by me, Quentin wore a green sleeper today and Sean refused to wear green).

irishQ

This morning I took Quentin to the CLSC to get weighed in, and he's finally hit the 10 lbs (and 1.5 oz) mark. The last 2 weeks he gained 25 grams per day, and this past week he gained 22 grams per day. I wonder if he's finally slowing down and the weight gain won't be as fast anymore.

QSbed

My boys hanging out in bed today.

Any of my readers do graphic work that will work for yarn? If that's you... and this interests you - please email me at knitpurlmama at gmail dot com.

I was a bit tired last night (as I am most evenings) and I totally forgot to announce the winner of the copy of Arranged by Catherine McKenzie. I printed out all my recent comments since starting this contest and put them into a hat. The winner is.....
