How my garden grows

I’ve been meaning to post about my garden. I haven’t had the time until now to sit down and write a post. I finally found 10 minutes. (And I probably should be doing something else, but I didn’t want this to be too outdated!)

These photos are from June:

Tomatoes section. (I planted grape, cherry & larger tomatoes).

Cucumbers & zucchini section is against the brick wall almost all the way down the entire plot of the 24 foot garden. I planted 2 or 3 kinds of cucumbers & one type of zucchini.

Peppers (left) (some green, and maybe we’ll be surprised with another color, as my sister-in-law gave us 2 pepper plants, but wasn’t sure what color they were) & raddish loot (right)

These photos below are from two weeks ago already:

Pepper section. So far all the know still is the green pepper plants… the other plants haven’t started to grow any peppers yet. Maybe soon!

Snow peas (left) & green beans (right). The snow peas have been producing and we’ve been eating them right off the plant already. The green beans are now almost ready to pick some to steam as a side dish for dinner!

The tomato section. We have a lot of tomatoes growing finally. I actually ate 1 red grape tomato already and it was beyond delicious. I cannot wait for more to come!

I’ll be back soon with another garden update to show you what new we’ve gotten since I took these pics (which are about 2 weeks old now).

Are you growing anything delicious in your garden?

Garden Update

gardenaug2012

We've had such a bad summer (weather wise) for garden produce. Our cucumbers haven't been doing well at all (we've had 1 so far all summer), our spinach didn't make it, neither did some of our beans. (Also, my fault, I let the radish stay too long in the ground, as we got busy/distracted and didn't pick it, and those weren't good anymore either). We did get lettuce though, all throughout June and July. But we didn't have any tomatoes or cucumbers to go with it to make a salad unfortunately.  We're finally now getting some beans, a LOT of the larger variety of tomatoes (I'm thinking about making sauce very soon!) and the cherry tomatoes are coming too. We certainly do not have as many zucchinis and cherry tomatoes as we did last summer, unfortunately. Here's to hoping for some more growth before the summer is through. How's your garden growing?

A Growing Garden

gardenweeds

Recently, I had gone out to the garden, after a busy couple of days, and the entire garden was taken over by weeds. It was beyond ridiculous! It looked like a bed of grass. After 2 sessions in 2 days, I weeded the entire garden patch. I've never seen weeds this bad before, not in any of the last 5 years that I've had a vegetable garden (started vegetable gardening summer 2008, so this is my 5th summer).

weeded

It was starting to look better again. Though, now that I posed this, it needs to be weeded again. Those things grow like crazy, and super fast too! One day they're gone, the next they're back!

gardenupdate

Things are starting to grow. We have been eating lettuce like crazy from the garden (in salads, in sandwiches, etc). But nothing else has been ripe yet. Tomatoes are growing, and as you saw in yesterday's post, we picked 3 zucchinis, cucumbers are starting to grow too. We lost a few items due to the crazy weeds (like spinach and green onion didn't take). We had lost 1 cucumber plant due to a storm we had early June. But other than that, the garden is thriving, the bean & pea plants are growing huge, and I should have loot pictures soon for you! I'm so eager to taste everything already!

How's your garden growing, if you have one?

Garden 2012

plot

This week I worked on my garden, starting on Monday, which was a holiday. I spent Monday weeding, turning the earth, adding in more black earth & manure as well. I spent all day in the garden. (I got a nice tan to boot). I was able to plant the front half of the garden (on the left hand side of the image), sowing any seeds I was able to, right into the ground. I kind of let time slip away from me this year, and I didn’t plant any early starters indoors. (Next year, I promised myself). So, on Tuesday and Wednesday I picked up at various greenhouses and garden stores, the rest of the supplies (more earth & more manure, as well as started plants) and by Wednesday evening, my entire garden was finished. I planted green onions, 3 kinds of cucumbers, zucchini, 2 kinds of radish, a variety of large tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, a variety of lettuce, spinach, and a variety of both beans and peas. I think that's everything! I am very excited to see everything grow & eat fresh vegetables. This year I opted to not do spaghetti squash, which we grew last year and I gave up on trying to do broccoli, celery and cauliflower, as well as any kind of pepper. I find that peppers don’t grow well in our backyard. Maybe I’ll try them again in the future, but not this year.

before

Another project I worked on this week was converting our old Little Tikes Turtle Pool into a herb garden. It was sitting on the side of our house not being used, and since a herb garden needs to be contained so that things like mint don’t spread, I thought it would be fun to convert the pool into a garden.

Filled it up with earth & manure too.

And planted! I have Mint, Chocolate Mint, Thyme, Rosemary, Chives, Basil, Oregano and Parsley. I’m very excited to see what happens with this! While this is my 5th summer vegetable gardening, this is my first time with a herb garden. I’ll keep you updated on it’s progress (both my vegetable garden & this herb garden too).

These are my 2 fave decorations in the garden.
Aren’t they both pretty?

Do you have a garden of any kind? What are you growing?
