It Really Does Look…

It really does look woven.

And I like the way the colors are coming out.

And I like the fact that you’re doing the “tails” at the same time as knitting it. So as soon as I cast off, that’ it, it’ll be done. Nothing to add on later for the fringe. I’m thinking of making it a little bit wider than the 5” the pattern calls for. (Maybe 6”? I don’t like too skinny of a scarf).

Organization

I've been trying to tackle organization chez Knit & Purl Mama. Let's take a look:

dotsystem

First, I came up with an organizational idea for my yarn room. I bought a few packs of these dot stickers. In order to make sure that every single skein in my yarn room is listed on Ravelry (in my personal stash AND on my trade/sell page), I'm checking each skein to make sure it's photographed & listed, and once it is, I'm putting a colored sticker on it, to mark it as done.

2skeindot

You see? These two are listed in my stash! I think it's a great system to make sure all my yarn is cataloged. I still have a long way to go, but it's coming along (slowly) (whenever I get the chance to work in my yarn room). When you have as much yarn as there is in my yarn room... you need a system to figure out what's what in there... and this is what came to mind!

patternorganization

On the theme of organization, my (printed) patterns are all now in protective sleeves in binders, categorized by type. (Sweater, socks, cowls, scarves, baby... you name it, there's a knitting binder for it).

habsfixture

The boys got a new light fixture in their room.

habsboysroom

They love it. And there is now more light in their room than what the last light fixture was giving off. So glad we can finally see when we're in their room.

framedcomic

While we were at Comic Con two weeks ago, I got to meet Lynn Johnson, who does the cartoon For Better or For Worse. It's one of the comics I actually read when I actually read the newspaper.

tous

Edited out my kids/hubby's last name. (Cuz in Quebec the wife (like myself) doesn't take their husbands name legally when they marry. Some b.s. about too high of a divorce rate and they don't want to do the legal paperwork - how encouraging to get married, eh?)

signaturelynn

onthewall

Hubby got around to hanging it up this past weekend in the kitchen.

extrachairattable

And speaking of the kitchen, we re-arranged a bit in there. We moved the water cooler over (it was in the corner where the green swiffer mop handle is) so that we could move over the table to give more room for all of us to be around it. We took the high chair out of the kitchen and now Quentin is at the table in a booster seat instead of in the high chair. This new way takes up way less space in the kitchen. He likes being at the table with us now. It's nice. Now, hubby is just waiting for Quentin to outgrow our Jumperoo, so that it's no longer taking up space in the kitchen. Though, I still put Quentin in it more than once daily, while I'm in the kitchen, he likes to jump the shit out of it.

showerorg

And I picked up an awesome corner of the shower stall caddy thing the other day while I was out. Jamie loved it so much in our ensuite shower (which I use) that he made me run out the next day and buy a 2nd one for the hallway bathroom (which he uses to shower). Why I didn't think to buy 2 at the same time? I'm not sure. Neither shower stall has shelves, so this was a perfect solution. I was getting sick of the little caddy that hangs over your shower head. There wasn't enough room for all my stuff on there that I was keeping stuff on the floor of the shower stall. New caddy is awesome.

bathroomrack

While I was in that same department, I saw this and had to have it. Things were piling up on top of the toilet tank, and it's nice to have shelf space in the bathroom now. Now I don't have to worry about things on the top of the toilet tank possibly falling into the toilet. Cuz in our house, we all know that a certain someone (cough, cough, Mackenzie) is good at flushing things down the toilet. Just two nights ago we lost a toy Lightning McQueen down the toilet. (It was really tiny actually, so it shouldn't block anything, it was from a book game).

Things are starting to get very organized around here. (And de-cluttered too!) I like this progress. I'm ready to pat myself on the back. I hope to get everything done that is on my list before my maternity leave officially ends in November. (Though, I'll be staying at home (and working from home) with Quentin until he has daycare in the spring - as soon as he turns 18 months old as our daycare has no baby room). But, I do want to make sure my "to-do" list is done before my actual maternity leave ends (mid-November).

Lastly, today, I want to show you something I made that my parents framed & hung up in their house:

scrabblegift

I think it was for their anniversary last year, that I made this for my parents. It has all our names in the family (pets included). My mom finally found a shadow box frame that fits this and she finally hung it in their house. I totally want to make one for our house now (just need to find the time to actually make it). Isn't it an awesome gift? I picked up some old board games at Value Village and had extra boards to make this! I still have 2 or 3 boards left, from my Value Village finds.

DIY Re-upholstering

stapleguns beforechair chairfame

Recently (last week), I took it upon myself to figure out how to re-upholster my kitchen chairs. So I borrowed one staple gun (for one size staples) from my best friend, and Jamie had the other staple gun, which was for another size staple, which I ended up using both in the end. Our chairs came with the table, which came with our house when we bought it in late 2007. Over the years, the boys as toddlers have gotten them quite filthy. They're really hard to wash. So, I hunted down (at Fabricville) a material that would wipe right down. I chose a nice dark grey color, and did some youtube video watching on re-upholstering chairs. I ended up re-watching this video a few times before starting.

cushion stapledunder

I unscrewed the seat from the chair frame, and put it on my pre-cut material.

staplinggun beforeandafter

I then began stapling away. (Right picture is one before and one after chair).

chairsdone chairsdone1

We now have 4 nicely covered chairs, that are like new again. I'm quite impressed with my re-upholstering skills. This is something that I had fun doing and would totally do again. I wish it were this easy to re-upholster a couch! We have some couches in our basement that need an uplifting. I even got a 2 thumbs up from Mackenzie! He noticed them right away when he got home from daycare the day I finished working on them.

I love the fact that once dinner (breakfast or lunch) is over, I can easily wipe down the chairs. One of the chairs was so bad, that it had smushed in Lucky Charms that Mack had sat on and squished into the chair seat. The stain from the colors wouldn't come out in the material the chairs were before. So glad that I have an easy cleaning time now.

Tanis & Koigu

autumnsun

I got some yummy yarn in the mail today – Tanis Fiber Arts Blue Label in Autumn Sun. I love fall colors, so this skein is totally up my alley. It’s the September installment of her fiber club. I believe I have one more installment left this year. It’s been fun getting yarn in the mail.

startlinen

I cast on 450 stitches with the Koigu KPPPM that I showed you the other day.

startlinenkoigu

450 stitches takes a LONG time to get through one row! It’s the Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf that I cast on by Churchmouse. So far, I’m loving it. (My ravelry project).

Second Time Charm

pod2 pod2size podstem

SPECS:

Pattern: Pea Pod inspired by Dulce Knits original pod that I tested knitted here (April 2011). See notes as to why it's inspired by & not the original pattern anymore. (My Ravelry Link)
For: Photography Prop
Yarn: Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash in Green Apple
Needle: US 13 - 9.0 mm
Size: Newborn
Timeline: September 11-22, 2011 (Though really only a couple of hours).
Modifications & Notes: Held yarn quadruple stranded. Total weight of the finished Pod is 194 grams. I used 48.5 g of each 100g skein. I managed to get this pod and the original one out of the 4 skeins held double stranded. (And I still have yarn leftover from each skein!) This was my 2nd time holding yarn quadruple stranded. For size, a tiny doll fit into the first pea pod, and now a cabbage patch doll fits into the one I just finished, so I am sure a regular sized newborn will for sure fit into this pea pod. The original one I knit, maybe a premature baby would fit in. It does not take this long to knit (11 days according to my start & finish dates) I just had a crazy busy week and a half and didn’t have time to finish it in one or two sittings. I'm quite happy with the results of this second pod. Now I just need a newborn to photograph in it! (Smaller pod in these images is the original one I knit, it's in these images for size).

Drawing

seanspic

Sean’s been really into drawing and has gotten really good at it too. He’s even coloring in the lines these days, quite nicely. I’m quite impressed with his artistic skills lately. But guess what he’s currently obsessed with drawing. Can you guess who that is?

Camilia

I'm having a pretty decent hair day, but that's the only thing that's going good for me today. I was up for hours last night. Quentin SCREAMED from 2:15 am until 6:30 am this morning. He got a few spurts of 15 minutes of sleep at a time during that time, but other than that, (sleeping on me while I rubbed his back), he screamed once I started to fall asleep and stopped rubbing his back. He didn't want to be in his crib. He didn't want to be in my bed either, really. He didn't want to sit on my bedroom floor, he didn't want his bottle. He kept shoving it away.

At one point, he woke up Sean. Jamie went and took Sean to the bathroom and then put him back to bed. I finally got Quentin to quiet down around 6:30 am, but he didn't sleep until closer to 7:30-7:45 am - for about 30 minutes until we had to leave to get our day started. Quentin and I started a new class this morning and I had to get Sean & Mack to daycare earlier than usual to get to the class on time.

Q092011

Quentin was not himself last night, or for the most of the day today. No idea who this kid was today. Not Quentin's temperament at all. Someone suggested I try Camilia, so I picked up some this morning. I refuse to use Baby Orajel and I hated using Clove Oil (which relieves toothaches) on the older boys. Clove Oil is so powerful it would numb my own finger while I applied it to their gums.

So far, Quentin has been receptive to the Camilia so far, and I hope it helps him either sleep through the night, or if he does wake up - I hope it helps him get back to sleep quickly and we don't have a repeat tonight of last night. If we do, I'll definitely be a walking zombie tomorrow.

What are your teething solutions? What do you swear by? Please tell!

:: :: ::

On another note, I owe you guys a crazy catch up post(s) from what's been going on that past month & a half. I still haven't blogged about our family vacation we took back in August. I finally had edited all my images and then my computer hard drive crashed. (Don't worry, none of my personal files were lost - everything was backed up on secondary and third drives). It was just my main hard drive that runs Windows and my software that was lost. I finally got my computer back last night, I felt so lost without it for almost an entire week, but I should be able to sit down and catch up with you soon. Life also got insanely busy over the last while, and sitting down at my computer to blog, use Facebook, amongst other personal time things, got pushed on the back burner. More soon!

Wine

Saturday night while we were out for dinner one of my best friends, (I have 2 of them + Jamie, of course), sent me a text message letting me know there was a surprise outside on our front porch. When I got home, there was a huge gift bag, with a sweetly written card & 2 bottles of wine. Jamie had been on antibiotics since last Monday, so we are saving these bottles of wine for the weekend, he's now finally finished the antibiotics & we can enjoy this lovely gift. Best friends rock.

Growing up Too Fast

The boys are growing up way too fast.

Sean asked to take a shower last night instead of a bath. Oh my. He's such a big boy. I really can't believe it. Mackenzie moved from pull-ups to big boy underwear yesterday as well. He's still in pull-ups during nap time & bedtime though. One step at a time. I swear, it's as if they both grew up over night. I'm so not ready for this - let me tell you!

And Quentin... my baby. He started to wave & clap all within the last week. I can't believe he'll be 10 months old in 10 days. 10 months old! No more single digits for the months.

Can I freeze time? If so, please tell me how.
