january seven

This is how we started off our morning. A note from our newspaper carrier stating on a post-it note "Thanks for never appreciating our service". Lovely. Basically asking "where's my Christmas tip?". Which was actually mailed two days ago, if they would have been a tad patient. (I had asked Jamie for over a week to write that check, and then it sat in my purse for a few days, as I was out of stamps and had to go to the post office to get stamps). Damn nerve. Jamie put a stop payment on the check (which was mad expensive), and we filed a complaint with the Gazette. First off, we're not expected to give tip. We've only been here 1 year, and regardless if we were living here 10 years, we are not expected to give a tip. However, we were pleased with their service, so we did write them a check and mailed it out.

Jamie called them, as their phone number was on the Christmas card they left in our mailbox (or mailed it, I can't remember). It's apparently a husband and wife team who deliver our paper, though, only the husband is an employee of the paper, according to the customer service representative I spoke to. The husband's answer to my husband "Oh, it was my wife who wrote that note"... (And that makes it okay?)

Anyhow, the complaint was made, the Gazette does NOT tolerate that, and I even put on file that I may not get my paper tomorrow. They wrote that down as a concern. They don't know if he'll get fired, but it's certainly not tolerated.

I just cannot believe that I actually got that with my newspaper.

I got some goody mail today:

My Bungalow 360 Owl bag. I love it. I saw it online somewhere and just had to have it.

Me likes.

I also received some yarn in the mail that I destashed from Bea.
It's Plymouth Yarn Rockin' Sox in color 6.

Today Mackie & I started Aqua Strollers. It feels goo to exercise in the pool again. I missed it over the holidays. One of the moms from yesterday's swim class is in the class, as well as a mom who's older son is 2 weeks older than Sean, and we took a class together with our now 2 year olds, at the Y back in the spring. It was great to see her again.

After the class, I picked up my mom and we met my friend Melissa (who was in Mack's swim class yesterday with her 4 month old, whom I went to high school with, and my mom taught with her dad years ago - my mom used to be a teacher), and we went to go see Bedtime Stories. Adam Sandler rocks. Really. He does. He's really funny. The movie was alright though. Not sure if it's worth full price. (Maybe as a DVD rental).

I'm not even sure what possessed me to leave the house today. The weather was mental. A lot of snow. Insane. I was cursing at myself pushing Mackie's stroller into the Civic Center to the pool earlier today. There's a lot of snow. I don't like a lot of snow. Even if it's fluffy snow.

We cancelled West Island Knits tonight because of the weather. I don't blame people for not wanting to leave their house!

Tonight while watching TV (Damages, Episode 5), I played with the skein winder my dad built for me. I had 3 balls of yarn I wanted to skein. 2 Sundara (Lenten Rose and Dahlia) and Wollmeise in Pillars of Fire, that I'd gotten in a de-stash from the lovely Betty. I like storing my yarn in skein, until I'm ready to use it. So to match all the other yarn, I skeined them.

ps- Still looking for that 6500th commenter!

Oh my God, that newspaper carrier has a lot of nerve! What an ass! I am glad you put a stop-payment on the check. Gah, it makes me mad just thinking about it!

Inconceivable how tipping has become an expectation instead of what it truly is, a reward if the customer so chooses!

The skein winder looks pretty cool, I'm wishing I had a swift and ball winder at the moment, maybe as my I-lost-10-pounds reward!

Oy! The nerve of that carrier, even if it's his wife, it looks bad on him, I don't care what he says. Good for you guys cancelling the check, that'll show off. All I can't think about, is whether or not he'll deserve a tip next winter...

Gosh, that was a lot of nerve. I would have left a note the next day (after the call to the office) about that.

I do like the bag you got.

Wow. That's nervy. I like how he blamed it on his wife. Good for you for cancelling the tip.

Your yarn is pretty.

I can't believe the nerve of some people. WTF is wrong with them? Seriously, I'd understand if they were teenagers, but two grown adults leaving a note like that? That's ridiculous. Good for you for stopping that check.

OMG what a jerk the carrier is! And I'm glad you cancelled the tip- they think they deserve something after that!?

And looove the owl bag & yarn- very nice!!!

Ouate de phoque? You should complain to the Gazette. That is not on!

It slays me that a tip/gratuity - given of free will is expected. I don't even know whom to tip or what anymore. I mean does a dental technician get one or?!?!?!?!?
Good on you for that stop payment and complaint.
by the way, you are a skeining fool. But I agree - it looks nicer in the skeins for storage.

Wow, that's very rude of your carrier! I'm glad you complained and cancelled the check.

That's insane. My husband ( and I sometimes) carried for the Hamilton Spec at night for a while. I wouldn't even expect a tip from anyone, LOL we rarely even saw our customers anyway.
I would have been so infuriated, I probably would have stopped my paper altogether and purchased it elsewhere. The audacity of some people, just outragous!!!
Nice bag, I love owls. :-) I've been taking the girls to the pool again and I realized how much I miss going, so I think we'll be starting up on a regular basis. :-)

That totally burns me! We never tip our carrier, because she sucks. We only receive the Gazette Saturday and Sunday, and at least twice a month the paper isn't delivered. Then we have to call, and complain, and then they either credit our account, or send her with the paper the next day.

This year was the first year she actually put the little card in our paper, and my fiance and I both kinda just snickered when we saw it.

I'm not against tipping the carrier - if they do a great job then they deserve it - but it shouldn't be expected!

I'm glad you cancelled the cheque - and I hope it was a big cheque so they get it and the guy says to his wife "ah, nuts, look what we missed out on because you are a complete moron."

Like everyone else, I'm completely aghast at your newspaper carrier. Good for you for reacting the way you did. I'm generally pretty live and let live - but that would have had me STEAMING mad.

I can see why you wanted to skein that yarn - it just glows - must have been a fun exercise :)

What a cute owl bag! I can't believe the "cheek" of that woman... tips are ALWAYS optional! So even if you didn't feel like tipping then that is just how it is.....

Tara said...

Wow, that really was uncalled for. I've never tipped the newspaper delivery person in my life!

Good for you on cancelling the tip check! The nerve of some folks.

I decided to come out of lurkdom due to let you know that I enjoy your blog! (I obviously found it through your website and being a member of the sock club). It has inspired me to re-launch my own blog. Well, I'm in the process of relaunching...have to relearn everything first!

What an idiot, as if that note will make anyone want to give a tip! No matter how the service was before that just makes me feel mad, and I am so far away, you must have been fuming!!!

Wow! I can't believe your paper carrier would leave a note like that! I don't blame you one bit for cancelling the cheque.

The owl bag is really cute!

WOW! haha.. so why do you tip newspaper people in canada? in the US we dont do that unless we really get to knwo the paper man or mail man... growing up my mom got to know our mail lady.. so she would give her small christmas gifts.. but thats it.
We're paying for the paper... so we figure we dont need to pay MORE ... the post people are getting paid.. but it is a nice gesture I suppose if you feel the need to do it.

Still had I gotten that note.. CANCELED haha.. thats crazy
